You are here:   Criminal Gangs > Gangs, Girls and Grooming: The Truth

At Sheffield Crown Court throughout September and October, eight men sat in the dock accused of rape and other sexual crimes against four girls, three aged 13 and one 16. The case resulted in five being convicted and three acquitted. All of the eight defendants were Pakistani Muslims and the girls white British. Does this matter? Not for the reasons the British National Party would have us believe, but it is nonetheless significant.

Razwan Razaq, 30, his 24-year-old brother Umar, Muhammed Zafran Ramzan, 21, Adil Hussain, 20, and Mohsin Khan, 21, were sent to prison for between four-and-a-half to 11 years.

The crimes were committed in and around Rotherham, a fairly typical south Yorkshire town. Although unemployment is fairly high, Rotherham is now also a popular summer visitors' destination when All Saints Square is transformed into a seaside beach. Every month, there is a farmers' market that sells produce from local farmers and traders, and Jamie Oliver's TV series, Jamie's Ministry of Food, tried to teach the town's inhabitants to establish healthy eating as part of daily life.

But many parents are concerned far more with the safety of their children than with organic food. Rotherham, along with many other towns, cities and villages in northern England has become infected with the vile activities of criminal gangs using children as currency. While child sexual abuse occurs in every community and culture, what is happening in Rotherham and elsewhere in Yorkshire and Lancashire is organised pimping of girls by Asian gangs who trade their victims for cash and favours.

"These men all know and trust each other," says Jane, the mother of one of the victims. "They don't abuse these girls because they are Muslim, but because they are criminals who think they are above the law."

Although there is no hard evidence of financial gain in the Rotherham case, child protection professionals tell me that the pattern in such cases is that the girls are traded for cash as well as favours between criminals. A number of the gangs operating in the region have found that the sharp drop in the price of drugs has led them to losing considerable income, and that selling girls is increasingly filling the gap.

Jane's daughter Sophie (not their real names) was a happy, ordinary 12-year-old until she met a group of adult males who would control every aspect of her life. Before she escaped, a year later, Sophie had been raped by the gang members as a way of "breaking her in" and then passed around various other men for sex.

The methods used by the pimps are sophisticated and sinister. First, the girls are identified in locations, such as parks, schools, leisure facilities and shopping malls after which boys of their age are sent to befriend them. After a friendship is established, the boys introduce their contacts to young men whom they often describe as cousins.

Then the grooming process gets really under way. The young man will take the girl out in his car, give her vodka, cigarette and cannabis, and take her to venues she would not normally experience until older.

I suppose the idea is that someone with a religion is automatically righteous, I have found by experience that religiously minded people are actually the ones you've got to watch out for, They may deny it but muslims are taught to look at anyone else as not worthy, we're all human at the end of the day, and humans are regularly really bad to each other. Young men regardless of race or religion want to have sex, its the reason were all here (not god!) just because theyre bacwards culture decrees otherwise, doesnt mean it wont happen, religion does NOT make you immune from human urges. ask the vatican!

Ah, is this another benefit of the rainbow Nation, foisted upon the natives by the liberal elite ? If only they realised that they are even more despised by Muslims than the natives , with their gay/women's right's agenda.

15 years ago, I and two other social workers were suspended for writing a report stating 'the girls, sisters, aged 10 and 12 years were groomed and raped by a group of Asian taxi drivers' our crime was to use the word Asian.

I feel very strongly on the issues around sexual exploitation and grooming of young girls as young girls are innocent and naive and are not aware that when they are recieving this attention from young boys and then men it is all part of a process and there is only one way it is going to end up and that is the young girls poising their innocence. I have 2 young daughters, my eldest being 6 and I am already frightened for their safety as being a support worker for 16-25 year olds I come across the grooming process regularly. I feel that people need to be more aware as before I worked with young people I knew nothing about grooming. Since it has been in the media recently i have being trying to find training in or around the Bradford area for myself and my colleagues on sexual exploitation and grooming as I feel passionately about raising awareness on the subject and looking at ways to try and prevent it in the future. After lots of searching I have been unsuccessful so would be very grateful if anybody knows of any they could post it on here for me please I can start to actively try to prevent grooming as much as possible.

Whilst I feel many of the comments made in this article are fair, I feel it is important to point out that Pakistani men do exploit and abuse their own women also.Men that can rape, abuse and violate women in public, are also capable of undertaking the same abuse behind closed doors. I know this because I have worked with Asian women, and I have heard their stories and listened to their frustration at how their experiences have been normalized in the media as how Asian's live. Unlike the broader community, Asian women have the dual disadvantage that they are related to their exploiter, they do not have the support of the extended family and some do not have the awareness of who and how to tell. Asian women, are threatened with " honor killings" and rape for being "whores", and within their communities. Asian women have to carry the weight of shame, humiliation and guilt for their abuse not the perpetrators. I feel to deal with sexual exploitation effectively, more has to be done to include the voices of ALL women affected by this issue and to ensure that a process is put into place that allows perpetrators to be prosecuted quickly, with minimal risk to the victims.

While I agree with your comments and sentiments in this article I would like to add some things. I live in a small northern town just outside Bradford, the area has a very hight Asian population and rather than being Pakistani it is very mixed with Muslims of many nationalities. My daughter are now all over 25 but when they were at home and at school they were constantly stopped by groups of Asian men in cars and asked for sex. We were even stopped and asked for sex when out in a group of five, myself and four teenage daughter. This is a problem that has grown over the last 20 years, but is seen as being a problem in cities but when I talk to friends who live in similar area they say things are the same. My friends also express a feeling of isolation as they feel they cannot express what they believe to be true, that this goes hand in hand with areas of high Muslim populations, for fear of being labelled racist. Also it is not seen as being a problem in small towns. While I agree that not all Muslim men are looking to groom young girls as prostitutes very large numbers of Muslim men of all ages are happy to stop young none Muslim girls with the intent of getting sex. These girls are not sophisticated Lolitas that could pass for 16 plus but little girls who look their age (one of my daughter would have passed for 12 at 18.) My daughters went to school with Muslim boys and they all knew that they were regarded as easy and useful for sex till they got married. My daughters worked with a high Muslim work force at where the married Muslim men there saw the white women as easy and were hitting on them all the time. All cultures, races and religions have paedophiles. The way that Islam teaches the superiority of Muslims by extension means that non Muslims are inferior and this is taught and implied through religious teaching and Islamic culture. Muslim women are superior, to be superior others must be inferior. This thinking allows people to do extreme things and believe they are doing nothing wrong. White girls are loose and asking for it. It also means that others in the Muslim community to turn a blind eye to it. Remember this had been going on a long time, decades, there will be a lot of Muslim men who know it has gone on. Until the Muslim community acknowledges that they have a problem with some of their young men and take action to deal with it there will not be a resolution to this issue.
