What to put in the subject line
Pitch — you want to write something for us.
Correction — we have got something wrong.
Permissions — you want to reproduce or syndicate something we published.
Advertising — you want to talk about commercial partnerships.
Subscriptions — a question about your newsletter or subscription.
Press — you are a journalist and need a comment or a contact.
Anything else, just write. We would rather have a good email in the wrong category than no email at all.
Pitching
We commission essays, criticism, reporting and argument.
Send a paragraph, not a finished piece. Tell us what the argument is, why you are the person to make it, and roughly how long it needs to be. If you have written elsewhere, link to two things you are pleased with.
What we are looking for:
- A position. Not a survey of what everyone thinks, but what you think, and why you think the people who disagree are wrong.
- Something to say that isn’t already being said. If four other publications ran the piece last week, we are probably not the fifth.
- Range. Politics and foreign affairs, yes — but also art, books, music, theatre, religion, education, science and medicine. Some of the best things Standpoint ever ran had nothing to do with Westminster.
- Prose. We publish long pieces because we like writing that takes its time. That is not a licence to be slow.
What we are not looking for: press releases dressed as opinion, AI-generated copy, or a pitch that could have gone to any magazine with the name changed.
We aim to reply to pitches within two weeks. If you have not heard from us in three, assume it is a no and place it elsewhere with our apologies — we would rather you did that than waited.
Rates and terms are agreed before commissioning. We do not ask people to write for nothing.
Corrections
We correct factual errors, and we do it on the page.
Tell us the article title, the URL, the specific statement you say is wrong, and — where you can — the source that shows what is right. We investigate everything and we reply.
Where we correct something, we add a note to the article saying what changed and when. We do not quietly amend and hope nobody noticed.
Much of this site is an archive of material first published between 2008 and 2021, reproduced as it originally appeared. Archive pieces are not updated to reflect later events, and we will not rewrite the historical record. But if an archive article contains a factual error, or something in it needs a clarifying note, we want to know.
Permissions and syndication
To reproduce an article, republish an extract beyond fair dealing, translate something, or license material from the archive, write to us with the article title, the URL, what you want to do with it, and where it will appear.
Copyright in some archive material rests with the author or with a previous publisher, so we may need to refer you on. We will tell you if that is the case.
Quoting a short extract with attribution and a link needs no permission from anyone.
