Everything on this site is currently free to read. Twelve years of essays, criticism and reporting, no registration, no metered paywall, no interstitial asking you to sign in.
We would like to keep as much of it open as we can. Publishing long pieces by good writers costs money, and at some point some of what we commission will sit behind a paid tier. When that happens we will say so plainly, on this page, before it changes — and the archive will stay open.
